Dear Marvel...

...please stop shitting on my favorite characters. It's not the first time you've done it and I doubt it'll be the last, but I'd really like to have a least one character left that I like who isn't dead, packaged off to a series that won't last long or a traitor to the team.
Killing Victor Creed was really unnecessary, especially the way you did it. Here's what I wrote about it at the time:
Wolverine chopped his head off with the Muramasa blade at the end of Wolverine #55, but not before they butchered his character.
First of all they wrote him as a stupid, mindless psychopath. Back in the day, when characterization used to be done well and consistently he was a psychopath sure, but a bloody intelligent one. That was part of what made him so damn dangerous.
Then they stripped away all of his humanity and made him completely feral. Now I have no problem with that, it could have made for interesting reading.
Then Logan essentially tortured Creed by chopping his arm off with a blade that meant that he wouldn't heal. Sure, they've damaged each other plenty more before, but then Logan gloated and you've got to bear in mind that Creed was essentially a retarded kitty cat at this point.
Then Creed managed to prove that he was a better man when Logan offered him a chance to "stop me from killing you" by telling Logan to do it, despite being feral. He even cried.
Logan also proved that he was not the better man by not even burying Creed, just leaving him for the wolves. So much for that honor thing there Logan.
Yeah, I'm a little on the pissed off side right now. I'm sure you all can tell that. He may have been a villain, but he was a good villain and could have been used so much better.
So thank you once again for shitting over the characters that I like and R.I.P Victor Creed, may your psychopathic little heart be reunited with Birdy and Mary.
(PS This fucked with continuity as well, since the fight started while Creed was still with Rogue's team and the last time we saw Creed in X-Men was just before the whole throwdown with the Marauders and Rogue being crazy. Grrr.)
Then there is Sage, whom you've pretty much just written off following the shit that is Die By the Sword. I loved her in X-Treme. She had such potential as a character and it would have been fascinating to see her history explored and her character evolved as she realized that she didn't have to be Xavier's perfect spy any more. But did you do that, no. Instead you sent her back into the Hellfire Club (something that could have been interesting if you'd actually shown it or used it at all), aborted the storyline because your darling Wheadon wanted to use them (well, an illusionary version of them anyway) and stuck her in New Excalibur as a 12-year old cheerleader. Ok, not really a 12-year old cheerleader, but she might as well have been and that was the way she was drawn. Then, when there is a chance to bring her back to main continuity do you do it, fuck no. You let her get mind raped by Roma, give her all the knowledge of the Omniverse, drive her crazy and send her off to a series that probably won't last long. No wonder the haters hate so hard.
Finally Gambit. I shouldn't get started on what you did to him when you made him Death. I don't think I've ever been so angry about an imaginary character before. I like the fact that you've allowed Carey to bring him back, but please live up to the hype and have him play a major part in this crossover like you've promised. Please don't send him to limbo afterwards either.
I'm going to trust in Kyle and Yost when it comes to X-23. Team Scratch and Sniff had better not shit all over her character. That's X-Force to you.
Finally good work on getting Cyclops to finally grow a pair.
Some love

Date: 2007-12-12 10:09 pm (UTC)...the Wolverine/Sabre stuff really burns my grits, though. They totally screwed the characterization on absolutely every side.

Date: 2007-12-12 10:16 pm (UTC)I really wish that the writers would use the characterization that's been established and not shit all over it. I have no problem with characters evolving but you've got to know and respect where they've come from. It's why I love Mike Carey's run, since he's referencing old continuity like woah.
Creed is one of my favorite villains, bless his psychopathic little heart, and all I've got left of him is the AoA Creed in eXiles, which is becoming New Exiles in January and probably going to end up canceled, and the rapidly becoming more animalistic Creed in Ultimate :(
Unfortunately there is only one Sage and she's looking to join AoA Creed in Limbo as well :(

They need to die.

Date: 2007-12-12 10:26 pm (UTC)I've been so tempted to send a letter simply with:
Marvel, you have failed me for the last time.
I wonder if they'd get it.
The worst thing was the solicits for the arc where they were constantly touting the defining moment in the Creed vs Wolvie fight and the fact that it would "change the Marvel Universe forever" (I'm so tired of that line. I see it on almost every solicit out there and very rarely does it actually happen.) I think that right from the first solicit I knew Creed was done for, even though part of me was saying "they're using him over in Carey's X-Men, there's no way they'll fuck continuity up the ass and take him down here". Yeah.
I think I could have handled it if it'd been well written and had actually had some point other than "let's reduce Creed to a retarded kitten and turn Wolvie into a fucking honorless torturer".
They really do need to die.

Date: 2007-12-12 10:32 pm (UTC)They've pissed me off something wicked over about the past year. I've got some hope back with Carey handling X-Men and bringing Gambit back, but post Messiah Complex crossover things are looking like they might go back downhill again.
Ah well. I don't buy most of the comics I read so it's not like I'm giving them any money for the crap they're publishing.

Date: 2007-12-12 10:41 pm (UTC)Ah Deadpool, someone else they're shitting on at the moment. Cable and Deadpool is canceled as of issue 50 and he's showing up in Wolverine: Origins. As if that isn't a death knell for a character given it's such a shit ongoing.
Also what's with giving Cable his own ongoing series :(
I'm going to miss my subtext. With massage oil o_0

Date: 2007-12-12 11:01 pm (UTC)I'm going to miss Bob. I've grown to love his intros to the series and the fact that he's been described as sidekick, hostage and pet, sometimes all three at once.
I'm kinda going to miss Weasel as well. I will never get over the Penitraitor, emphasis on the word traitor.
I'm going to miss Wade the most though. He's done so well under the current writer (whose name I can never spell). At least I've got back issue to read - I think I'll start with baby Cable and hit the most subtext worthy stuff (only Wade can get away with saying that Cable's t/o mesh rises to the occasion)

Sigh.
On an off topic, I'll get you guys' Christmas present sent off as soon as I can make it to the post office while it's open. I, er, was browsing around and I saw it and... it's not much, but after the previous parts of this conversation... well, I couldn't resist. It's mildly disturbing and cute all at once.
Moo hoo ha ha, now I'll have you wondering.
